Diving the Turks and Caicos: A Subaquatic Odyssey

Northwest Point’s Underwater Wonders
The 70 miles of reef at Providenciales (Provo) offer captivating dives. Along Northwest Point, the coral of “Black Forest,” with its wall plummeting to 300 feet, showcases an array of black coral species. “Shark Hotel” is a plateau teeming with plate corals, while the “Crack” a unique geological formation, provides an exhilarating swim-through experience.
Thunder Dome and Pearls
For extravagant night-diving enthusiasts, “The Dome,” once the setting of a French television game show, offers a unique adventure. In 1993, the picturesque Turks and Caicos Islands became the backdrop for a unique and daring game show called “Le Tresor de Pago Pago” (The Treasure of Pago Pago), the brainchild of French television producer Jacques Antoine. This early precursor to modern reality television pitted couples against each other in a series of challenges, the most dramatic of which involved free-diving into a submerged steel dome.
Located in approximately 30 feet of water, the dome became the arena for a thrilling competition. A machine within the structure would periodically release a flurry of “pearls,” and the free-divers (diving while holding your breath) had to collect as many as possible during their breath-hold. To add another layer of strategy and suspense, scuba-equipped “mermaids” circled the dome, offering the contestants a tantalizing choice: trade a precious pearl for a life-saving breath of air. This element of risk and reward made for compelling television, highlighting the physical prowess and the tactical decision-making of the contestants.
Above the Abyss
As the week progresses, the Turks & Caicos Aggressor II® charts a course southwest, toward the mesmerizing wall dives of West Caicos, which offers some of the most remarkable wall dives in the Turks and Caicos. Sheer coral cliffs plunge thousands of feet into the abyss, offering a glimpse into the Earth’s watery, uncharted depths. You’ll encounter a pageantry of marine life: triggerfish, turtles, parrotfish, queen angelfish, and countless sponges. “The Driveway, “ with its sand chute and diverse marine life, offers a thrilling descent. “Gullies” features a swim-through gully with spectacular sponge formations. “Rock Garden Interlude” is a sanctuary for sea turtles and scorpionfish. “The Anchor/Whiteface” showcases a 17th century anchor embedded in the coral wall, with the possibility of encountering a resident reef shark. Each dive, from the sponge-laden “Tons of Sponges” to the dives of “Sunday Service,” is a visual symphony of color and life.
Diving the Wilderness: French Cay
The voyage culminates in the remote waters of French Cay. The “Double D,” aptly named for its two coral mounds, is a bustling underwater garden brimming with life. The dive features coral pinnacles teeming with black durgon (trigger fish), eagle rays, and reef sharks. “Half Mile Reef” lives up to its name with its vibrant coral formations and an abundance of marine life, while “G-Spot” showcases nurse sharks navigating through forests of gorgonian and elephant ear sponges. The final dive, “Rock & Roll,” is a grand finale of sharks, groupers, turtles, and octopodes.
